Satellites orbiting planet Earth

March 13, 2017 | Science

According to the Index of Objects Launched into Outer Space maintained by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), there are more than 4.256 satellites currently orbiting our planet. Of those, only 1.419 are operative while the remaining 2.837 don’t return data to the Earth anymore and are therefore added to the count of space debris.

The interactive visualization displays all the operative satellites launched in orbit since 1989 updated to June 2016. The filters allow to investigate the satellite’s main purposes, users, owning countries as well as to obtain more specific information.
